Flower Embellished Ex-Turtleneck
I was given some turtlenecks for my daughters, just to find out that they do not like things around their neck! Instead of having them be sitting all alone in the closet I decided to redesign the turtlenecks into something my girls would wear. I didn’t have a plan at first, but I knew I wanted flowers for this shirt. Sometimes my best finished products come from creating and pinning as I go. My method was a little intimidating, but I figured how else would I learn? I don’t know if you are anything like me, but I learn better by doing, and I definitely need visuals.
Altering the neck and sleeves:
Select a turtle neck and cut the sleeves off about 6 inches from the shoulder seam on both arms. I like the puffy shoulders, so a
quick way I accomplished this was by cutting out a teardrop shape (point at the bottom and rounded end at the top of the sleeve) and tying the ends so the material puckers above the knot. Next, cut off the neck of the shirt just below the seam. Sew a hem around the neck to make it more “finished”. The wonderful thing about t-shirt material is that it doesn’t fray,so you don’t have to work as hard to finish the edges.
Creating the flower cluster:
Using the sleeves that were cut off, I used a small circle template to cut the circles for the flowers. You could use any small circular object such as a cookie cutter or base of a cup. The number of circles useddepends on how full or how largeof a flower cluster desired. For this shirt, I cut out 18 circles that are 1 ½ inches across. I bunched each one individually and used hem pins to attach them it to the shirt. I continued until the cluster was what I liked. Then one at time I sewed each flower on by hand starting in the center of the circle/flower.I prefer to sew the flowers on by hand because they tend to stand up more. If you prefer to use your machine, it will work too. I made sure that as I was sewing each circle on, that I was also tacking down the edges on some parts to for extra security. This helps the flowers lay nice after washing the shirt.
I use little thread snippers for this part of the shirt, when I use the bulkier scissors, I usually end up cutting more than I want to, and it’s not fun! Have fun creating and don’t be afraid to play around with ideas and material, you never know what you’ll discover!
