Stabilizing Seams + More About Tension Video

Welcome back to our Beginner's Guide to Serging! In this episode, we talk a little more about tension and go over how to stabilize you seams and why.

Last week you learned how to balance tension for a standard overlock stitch. This week we'll go over how the fabric weight will alter your tension. However, with serging, you'll find sometimes tension alone may not balance your stitch. Stabilizing your seam is an easy way to improve the look of your stitch, especially with thin fabric.

Also, you may want to reinforce high stress areas or just prevent your seam from warping out of shape. Because overlock stitches stretch with your fabric, using stay tape, ribbon, binding, and even clear elastic are great ways of stabilizing high stress areas, like shoulder seams.
