I specifically need instructions for Model 648 Touch & Sew Singer. My machine’s base is a one molded
piece that doesn’t seem to come off. Any further information om how I can renew the gears in this specific machine.

Actually your video was excellent except for the problem I had on my model C648

    • Sue says:

This a great blog and a great tutorial! I have figured out a lot as a gal alone to work on my many machines, but tips like glopping on the grease… I was never sure how much to do, and now I know more is better! Or the little details like a magnetic screwdriver.. and such good tips. I have a suggestion I often forget to do, take a photo of what you are working on so you can get the parts back in order.. the wonder of cell phone photos. All the videos here are excellent and please please keep posting more. Sewing Parts is an excellent resource and I will be buying parts. Thank you Sue

    • Sarah Sarah says:

Hi Joe! You have the front gear out? What part are you having trouble removing? I think the word you meant to type got deleted somehow.

  3. Jennifer T says:

Thank you so much for this tutorial. My machine is up and running again. Thanks again…

  6. Francis S says:

I received the feed drive gears I ordered, but cannot slide out the first rod with the small gear. A portion of the stitch control bar is blocking the way. Any suggestions on what to do? This is a Singer Model 756.

  7. Francis S says:

I purchased parts from your company . Why did you just delete my question without responding to it in any manner? Not very good customer service!!!!!

    • Sarah Sarah says:

      Hi Mr. Frank,
I am so sorry I missed you comment! It wasn’t deleted – the comments don’t get posted unless I view them. I am so sorry. I am contacting our repair team to see what they suggest immediately. Once again, I apologize for the oversight.
      Thank you!

    • Sarah Sarah says:

Hi Mr. Frank! I heard back from our repair team. They said it’s hard to tell without seeing it themselves. Do you have the service manual? If not, I can email it to you.

  8. deb leverence says:

I have a model 6268 and the gear that controls the feed dogs has disintegrated and now the feed dogs do not move. I removed the lower plate and found the gear in pieces. Is this something that a do-it-yourselfer can do or do I need to find a service tech that can work on a machine this old. Can you also tell me if this part is available still?

    • Sarah Sarah says:

Hi Deb! You could definitely try repairing it yourself. If worse comes to worse, you can always take it to a repair shop. And you’ll already have the correct part to give them. What is the maker of your machine?

  9. anna says:

I have a singer touch and sew 750 just put all new gears in it, now it won’t feed the fabric thur, what could be the problem the feet that comes up from the bottom is smooth could that be the problem… thanks

    • Sarah Sarah says:

Hi Anna! The feed dogs that pull the fabric through should definitely not be smooth. They should look like metal teeth. Are you sure you didn’t lower the feed dogs?

      • Claudia says:

My feed dogs on my Singer 750 are also no longer working. I’m checking into replacing the gear however, the actual feed dogs were already replaced and they are not like teeth, they are like a hard rubber. So I’m unclear on your comment about “metal teeth”. Thanks for your help.

  10. Lynda w says:

Where can I get replacement gears for a singer 4670 sewing machine?

    • Sarah Sarah says:

Hi Lynda! We’re trying to find gears for your machine. Looks like it’s not typically available in the US, but we’ll see what we can find. Thank you for being patient.

  11. Sharon says:

I’m experiencing a problem with my ruffler ~ the needle won’t pass thru to make a stitch. Any suggestion on what to try

    • Sarah Sarah says:

Hi Sharon! I’m so sorry you are having trouble. Does it seem like the needle is getting jammed on something? If possible, could you send us a picture of how it’s installed?

  12. Bonnie says:

Yay! My Singer Creative Touch 1030 works again! I purchased the bevel gear set from you and my husband installed them with the help of your video! We recently took it to a local” Singer” sew and vac repair shop and were told it was time to replace it. He really talked bad about Singer products and tried to sell me a new Elna. I have had this machine 34 years and know the day will come when I HAVE to replace it…but I am happy it is not today!

  13. Jayne says:

Sarah can you please tell me what bobbin I should use for my Bicor VX1005? It skips stitches or the thread bunches up. I think the problem is the wrong bobbin.

  14. jim says:

Trying to replace feed drive gear on Singer 6233. Feed drive shaft will not slide out. Have loosened all set screws on gears and removed clip. Shaft will only move about half inch. Seems to be jamming on bushing next of belt drive gear. Any suggestions?

  15. David Reynolds says:

I just replaced the feed dog gears on my Singer 534 Stylist and have a problem now with the underside stiche being loose. Do I have it timed correctly or is their another problem. The top stich seems to be fine. Thanks

  16. Michele says:

I just replaced all the gears in my Singer 834 Stylist. The bobbin thread is now forming giant bird nests on the underside of the material. I have referred back to the video several times and tried several minute adjustments to the timing with no success. Any advice? Thanks in advance

    • Krisann Robles says:

Bird nests in the bobbin mean it isn’t threaded properly up top; little or no tension is being applied to the top thread.

  17. Kay says:

Thanks to you and this video, I replaced my gears and saved over $100 to have it done. Thank you so much for this tutorial. I was also able to set the timing and it has a perfect stitch.

  18. Loose says:

I have an 1030 Creative touch and can’t get the shaft to slide all the way over?

  19. Annalee K Trimm Irwin says:

I am having trouble with my singer 9134 model. It is the tension of the bobbin thread. Sometimes it is perfect and the next it is stuck and won’t move. Could it be I need to replace the bobbin case?

  20. vickie says:

hey what causes this machine is now running wasn’t before but it runs ragged sounds like dragging it runs high than low and like theres no juice reminds me of a car when one is trying to set the idel up and low rev

    • Sarah Sarah says:

Hmm, I’m not entirely sure. But I’ll be sure to ask our repair department first thing in the morning and see what they say.

    • Sarah Sarah says:

Hi Vickie! I spoke with our repair team. However, they really suggest taking it to your local Sew and Vac store. Unfortunately, they can’t really pin down anything definitively.

  21. vickie says:

by the way my machine is a pfaff1209

  22. toni says:

how do you replace the right bottom gears on sewing machine

  23. joe r aguilar says:

ihave an elna su the pattern selection gear was at bottom of machinewhen my wife bought the machine.i have looked every where and cannot find, instructions on how to change the gear

  24. Jay C says:

I have the same question as Francis S except I have a singer 758. Last week I replace the feed dog and the Horizontal Hook drive gear. Now I need to replace the feed dog gear set. I cannot get the shaft up far enough to remove the small gear, it hits part of the stitch control arm. I have the service manual I ordered from you, but has no detail. Your repair team have any suggestions? Thanks

  25. Tiffany says:

This video worked for me. There might be one mistake, though. I believe the hook drive gear with the two set screws goes on the bottom and not the top. I think he makes the mistake of using the gear with two set screws when putting the first hook drive gear in on the top shaft. At the very beginning of the video and near the end of the video when he is setting timing, it looks like the gears are in the proper positions with the gear with the two set screws on the bottom.

    • Sarah Sarah says:

Hi Tiffany! Thank you for your comment! I’ll past it along to him. The man in the videos is one of the owners and has been repairing machines for decades.

  26. George Leslie Borden says:

Just replaced the gears on my Singer 774. Thanks for letting me know how to sync up the needle and the rotating hook.

  27. jefflz says:

My wife’s SingerModel 524 has parts in the way of the power supply and it cannot easily be lowered out of the way so the gear shats can be moved. The Feed Dog Gear crumbled and needs to be replaced. Any suggestions?

    • a woolgatherer says:

I had this problem too. I took the side panel off (the one that goes around the hand wheel) and managed to pry off the plastic cover that goes over the left side of the power supply. After maneuvering that out of the inside of the machine, I had to manipulate some wiring around and was able to move the power supply box into the same position as shown in the video. Took a little extra time, but it worked! Good luck!

      • jefflz says:

Thank you so much woolgatherer. I understand your solution and am going to give it a try and report back,

  28. A Woolgatherer says:

Thank you so much for the super helpful video! I felt very confident fixing my own machine for the first time thanks to the detailed step by step instructions and close ups provided here. I’m sure I’ll be back for more instruction and parts!

  29. KellyM says:

I have a Kenmore and I think I just stripped a gear. I can hand feed the needle if I push on the hand wheel as I turn it. If I use the foot pedal for power the needle will drop down to the fabric and then stop. At that point there is a distinctive grinding noise coming from the hand wheel area. If I turn the hand wheel without pushing, it makes the same noise. Any idea what I might have done?

    • Sarah Sarah says:

Hi Kelly! I’m not entirely sure, as every machine is different. Is there a sew/vac repair shop in your area? It’ll definitely be worth having someone take a look at your machine.

    • Sarah Sarah says:

Hi again! I just asked our repair team and they said it definitely sounds like a stripped gear.

  30. Laurel says:

Thank you so much. This video gave us the courage to take apart my machine so that we could place the bobbin gears.

  31. Linda says:

My friend just bought a singer stylist 534 series and the feet are in the down position and we can not find anywhere or way to raise them, Do you know how?

    • Sarah Sarah says:

Hi Linda! The Singer Stylist 534 doesn’t have a drop/raise feed dog function, so if you can’t see the feed dogs moving when you turn the hand wheel towards your body a few times, then the gears may be broken. The 534 actually uses a darning/feed dog cover plate instead of a drop feed lever.

  32. valerie says:

great video, very helpful, just replaced my feed dog gears. working on the timing, but everything is almost working again! thank you! Singer Stylist 513

  33. christina says:

the hook does not move is it broken Singer 2210

  34. Krisann Robles says:

Is there a video that shows how to remove the feed gear on a serger. I’ve had three white sergers with cracked feed gears. I have been unsucessful thus far in removing the old ones in order to replace them. It seems there is just not quite enough room to disengage the shaft from the gear. It is off by only a fraction but it is enough to keep me from removing it. Perhaps I am missing a step or need to use more physical force (I hate to do the unless it is specifically suggested lest I accidentally damage the machine).

    Thank you!

  35. sewgoober says:

What is the red gear grease he is using?

  36. Colleen Wright says:

Would any know what the “secret” to replacing the gears in a singer 620.

  37. mike says:

best repair video on the internet.thanks so much for providing the video

  38. Sherryl Myrick says:

I am trying to replace the gears in a singer touch n sew 756. I need to remove the stitch control to get the shaft out.

  39. Frances Knoll Waltman says:

Wow. This guy knows what he is doing.

  40. Frances Knoll Waltman says:

I am considering trying to replace all of the gears in my (2) Singer 750′s. I am not getting much encouragement and am scared to death I will ruin these machines that I love. I really like the idea of taking photos of the machine as I take it apart.

  41. toxicjs says:

I have a singer 6233 I’m having an issue loosing the screws that release the rod with the long gear on it. Any suggestions? Thanks in advanced :)

  42. Vicki says:

This is nice to have videos to view about different sewing machines. It is good when the local sewing tech doesn’t restore a sewing machine.. I have had to go to an alternate sewing place at times.. It is good for Singer 600 and 700′s .. Not sure if there is a video for replacing the motor if ever needing to..
