Children's Super Hero Cape Tutorial

Ever had your child raid your fabric drawer and run around the house with a yard of jersey over his/her head? It turns out kids really like to dress up in super hero capes and it gives them a distraction from your formerly folded fabric stash. However, if you do have a little munchkin pulling on your pants 24/7, you need a fast solution that doesn’t require too much work. This was my solution. It is super fast, and you don’t have to cut any curves. If you can sew a blanket, you can make this cape in no time.

Supplies:
  • 2 yards of fabric in contrasting colors. If you don’t want a lining, 1 yard of fabric is fine. I suggest a fabric that is easily washable. If you don’t want to do any hemming, jersey knit works great. No fray!
  • Elastic
  • Scissors
  • Velcro
  • Basting spray
  • Lightning Bolt and/or Letter template (Optional).Lightening bolt template is provided under Step 7. I drew the letter ‘C’ free hand, but you can find all kinds of funky and funk fonts on Google to print out and use as a template.
  • Tracing Marker (optional)
Step 1

Sewing Machine- Place fabric right sides together and sew a ¼ inch seam. Leave a small opening large enough to turn fabric right side out (just like you would with a pillow case.) Sew opening closed (either by hand or by flipping edges under and machine stitching).

If you have a serger, you can just place fabric wrong sides together and serge ends using a 4 thread over lock stitch.

Step 2

Sewing Machine - Turn lining up 2 inches on top and bottom ends of cape and straight stitch.

Step 3

Cut 10 inches of elastic. Pull elastic through casing, stitch down just the ends of the elastic on both sides.

Step 4

Cut a 4 in by 8 inch rectangle, fold in half (hotdog style) right sides together, sew 3 sides. Turn right sides out.

Cut in half (hamburger style) and sew down open ends. You should have two strips.

Step 5

Sew strips to ends of collar.

Step 6

Sew Velcro to neck straps. You could also use some sticky back Velcro.

Step 7

Trace lightning bolt and letter on lining fabric and cut out. Use basting spray to secure lightning bolts and letter on right side of cape. Stick in a few pins just for a little extra hold. Use a narrow, short zig zag stitch to attach.

Step 8

Sit back and relax while you little one flies around fighting forces of evil.
