Janet’s Star Quilt Block Tutorial ✨ | Easy & Beautiful Design
The Janet’s Star quilt block is a charming design that stands out thanks to its unique construction and customizable center square. Using a combination of white squares, rectangles, and small accent pieces, the block comes together in a nine-patch layout that frames a featured center motif. By choosing a fun or meaningful print for the center, quilters can easily set the tone for the entire block, making it a versatile and engaging project that’s both visually interesting and enjoyable to assemble.
I love this quilt block, and not just because of how it looks, but because it’s called Janet’s Star. That makes it extra special to me since I have a sister named Janet, so I’m dedicating this block to you, Janet, and to your Kettle Country Quilters. Hello, ladies, and thank you so much for watching and supporting us. We truly appreciate you. This is a charming block with some interesting construction elements, and it’s a little different from your typical half square triangle design.
To make the Janet’s Star block, you’ll start with four white squares cut at 4½ inches. You’ll also need a center square, also cut at 4½ inches. For my center, I chose a small fox print because I thought it was adorable and it fit perfectly with the fabric collection I was using. The collection is called Owl Be Home for Christmas by Benartex, and we’ll include a link to it in the description in case you’d like to use the same fabrics. When choosing your center square, look for an image or motif that will stand out and set the tone for the block.
Next, you’ll cut four white rectangles measuring 2½ by 4½ inches. These will be used to build the outer sections of the block. You’ll also need four patterned rectangles in the same size, 2½ by 4½ inches, which will frame your center image. Finally, cut eight small squares at 2½ inches. These little squares will form the pointed peaks that give Janet’s Star its distinctive look.
To begin construction, start with the white rectangles. Take one white rectangle and place a 2½-inch square on one end, right sides together. Draw a diagonal line across the square and stitch directly on that line. Once stitched, trim away the excess fabric, leaving a quarter-inch seam allowance, and press the piece open. Repeat the process on the opposite end of the rectangle with another 2½-inch square, stitching the diagonal line so it crosses the first seam. After trimming and pressing, you’ll have one completed outer unit with pointed ends. Repeat this process until all four units are finished.
Next, attach the patterned rectangles to these units. Simply place a patterned rectangle right sides together with one of the constructed pieces and stitch along the long edge. When opened and pressed, this creates one side of the star frame. Once all four sides are complete, you’re ready to assemble the block.
Lay out your pieces with the center square in the middle, surrounded by the four star units. The white 4½-inch squares go in the corners, completing the nine-patch layout. Assemble the block just like a traditional nine-patch, sewing pieces into rows and then joining the rows together. Before long, the Janet’s Star block comes together beautifully.
This block really shines based on what you choose for the center square, as that detail sets the mood for the entire design. I absolutely love how this one turned out and hope you’ll give the Janet’s Star quilt block a try.
