Janome Sewing Machine History

The history of Janome is a story of success through innovation. Janome was established in 1921 as Japan's first home sewing machine manufacturer. In Japanese, the word Janome means "eye of the snake." Janome earned this name when founder Yosaku Ose invented a round metal bobbin system to use instead of the traditional long shuttle. Ose's bobbin wound faster and worked more efficiently, becoming the most widely used bobbin style and the ancestor of nearly all modern industrial and domestic sewing machine bobbins.

Janome has made several contributions throughout its history. Most notably, Janome manufactured the first programmable computerized sewing machine, a professional style home embroidery machine, and the first embroidery machine designed to use technology developed for high precision robotics. Janome has expanded its scope to include long arm quilting, multi-needle embroidery, and sergers/overlocking machines. Janome's best-selling models include the HD3000 Heavy Duty, MyLock 634D Serger, and Janome MC400E Embroidery Machine.
