Create Stunning Contrast with the Negative Space Diamonds Block
In this video, Bob Benson introduces the Negative Space Diamonds quilt block, a simple and striking design perfect for beginners. Using small half square triangles, he shows how alternating dark and light fabrics create contrasting diamond shapes that seem to mirror each other. Bob explains how black fabric enhances the design by making the colors pop and demonstrates how easy it is to assemble. The result is a quick, eye-catching quilt block that delivers a bold, modern look with minimal effort.
Hi everyone, I’m Bob Benson, and today I want to show you a quilt block I call Negative Space Diamonds. I named it that because each block features a diamond shape, and every diamond has its opposite in the surrounding space. If you see a black diamond, the print fabric forms its negative space. If you focus on the print diamond, then the black background becomes its negative space. I love how this design plays with contrast and depth.
If you’re a beginner, this block is absolutely for you. It might be the simplest and easiest quilt block we’ve ever made here. Let me show you how it works. If you can make a half square triangle, you’re ready to go.
For this example, I used small 2½-inch squares, but you can make them any size you like. I prefer using black as one of the colors because it makes the design stand out and really helps the other colors pop.
To create the pattern, make two sets of half square triangles—one with the black fabric forming the diamond shape and one with the print fabric forming the diamond shape. Sew them together in pairs, then join the pairs to complete the block. It’s quick, simple, and gives you a striking design with very little effort.
This is a wonderfully beginner-friendly project that looks far more intricate than it actually is. Give the Negative Space Diamonds quilt block a try, and as always, happy sewing!
