Star Heart Quilt Block Tutorial | Step-by-Step with Bob

I call this quilt block Star Hearts because it combines a classic quilting star with a sweet heart right in the center. I made mine using a fat quarter bundle from Art Gallery Fabrics, choosing a few of my favorite prints and pairing them with a white background. It’s a fun block to piece together, and I love how stunning several of them look side by side. Keep reading for step-by-step instructions to make your own Star Hearts quilt block!

Star Hearts Quilt Block Instructions

1. Cut your fabric pieces.
   I start by choosing one print fabric and one background fabric. For each block, I cut:
   • Five 3-inch squares from the background fabric
   • Five 3-inch squares from the print fabric
   • Six 2½-inch squares from the print fabric
   • Four 1½-inch squares from the background fabric
2. Make the half-square triangles.
   I pair each 3-inch background square with a 3-inch print square. I draw a diagonal line from corner to corner, sew ¼ inch on both sides of that line, and cut along the drawn line. After pressing them open, I have 10 half-square triangles.
3. Set aside the corner squares.
   I take four of the 2½-inch print squares and set them aside. These will become the four corners of my quilt block.
4. Make the heart peaks.
   I use the remaining two 2½-inch print squares to create the top of the heart. On each print square, I place a 1½-inch background square in one top corner. I draw a diagonal line across the small square and stitch directly on that line.
5. Trim and press.
   After stitching, I trim away the excess fabric, leaving about a ¼-inch seam allowance. Then I press the small background triangle open.
6. Repeat on the opposite corner.
   I place another 1½-inch background square on the other top corner and repeat the same process. Once both corners are sewn, trimmed, and pressed, I have one heart peak. I repeat these steps to make the second heart peak.
7. Lay out the block.
   I place the two heart peaks next to each other to form the top of the heart. Then I arrange the half-square triangles around them to complete the heart and create the star design. The four solid 2½-inch print squares go in the four outer corners.
8. Double-check the placement.
   Before I start sewing, I always look over the entire layout to make sure every half-square triangle is facing the right direction. This is also a great time to take a quick photo so I can refer back to the layout while sewing.
9. Sew the block together.
   I sew the pieces together in pairs, then join those pairs into larger sections. Once each row or section is assembled, I sew everything together until the full Star Hearts block is complete.
10. Press and enjoy!
    I give the finished block a good press, and that’s it! The Star Hearts block is ready to use in a quilt, table runner, pillow, or any other project I have in mind.
