Different Directions Quilt Block | Easy Beginner Quilting Tutorial

Sometimes the simplest quilt blocks create the most interesting designs! I'm calling this one Different Directions, and when you look at the finished quilt, you'll see exactly why. The pattern reminds me of those signs with arrows pointing every which way!

This is one of the quickest quilt blocks I've put together, and the best part is that there are no half-square triangles or complicated cuts! Just a few simple pieces of fabric and some straight stitching.

For this project, I'm using our Oyster Shell #11 Fabric, printed right here at Sewing Parts Online. Let's get started!

Fabric Cutting Instructions

For one Different Directions quilt block, you'll need:

Print Fabric:

• (1) 5" square for the center

• (2) 2½" × 5" strips

• (2) 2½" × 4¾" strips

Background Fabric (White):

• (2) 2½" × 4¾" strips

Fabric Used: Sew Creative Oyster Shell #11

Step 1: Sew the Smaller Strips Together

Start with your two 2½" × 4¾" print strips and two matching white strips.

1. Pair one print strip with one white strip.

2. Sew them together along the long edge using a ¼" seam allowance.

3. Repeat with the remaining two strips.

4. Press your seams toward the darker fabric.

You should now have two matching strip units.

Step 2: Add the Center Strips

Next, grab your 5" center square and two 2½" × 5" print strips.

1. Place one print strip along each side of your center square.

2. Sew both strips in place using a ¼" seam allowance.

3. Press your seams.

Now you've got the center section of your quilt block!

Step 3: Complete Your Quilt Block

We're almost finished!

1. Take the two strip units you made in Step 1.

2. Position one along the top and the other along the bottom of your center section.

3. Make sure your print and background fabrics are arranged correctly to create the directional design.

4. Sew both sections in place using a ¼" seam allowance.

5. Give your completed block a final press.

And just like that, you've got your Different Directions quilt block!

Step 4: Arrange Your Quilt Blocks

Here's where this project really comes to life!

Once you've made several blocks, start arranging them in different directions. Rotate the blocks to create a pattern that looks like arrows pointing this way and that way.

It's amazing how one simple block can create such an interesting quilt design!
