From Scraps to Quilt Blocks: Scrap Crazy Made Simple
In this video, Bob Benson from Sewing Parts Online introduces the Creative Grids Scrap Crazy 8-inch template set and shares why he loves using it for quilting with leftover fabric. Before diving into the demo, Bob celebrates the team behind the videos, including videographer Sohome and marketing assistant Maggie, marking their 100th video milestone. He explains how simple the Scrap Crazy template system is to use, requiring no measuring or complex piecing—just cutting around the plastic templates and assembling the pieces. Using only fabric from his scrap bin, Bob demonstrates how to create a colorful, unique quilt block while saving time and materials. The result is a fun, no-stress project that turns leftover fabric into something beautiful, perfect for quilters of any skill level.
Hi everyone, I’m Bob Benson, and today I’m going to talk about the Scrap Crazy Template from Creative Grids. This tool quickly became one of my favorites because it makes quilting simple, fun, and stress-free.
I had so much fun using this set because it takes all the measuring and precision cutting out of the equation. There’s no need to make half-square triangles or worry about matching points—just straightforward cutting and piecing. The set includes three main pieces: the A/B piece, which can be used as either a short or long section depending on where you cut along the marked line, the C piece, and the D piece.
On the back of the instruction sheet, you’ll find several layout ideas showing how these shapes can fit together. I picked one design and got to work. Honestly, there’s nothing easier than laying the plastic template on your fabric and cutting around it. No measuring, no complicated math—just trace, cut, and sew.
For this project, I used fabric straight from my scrap bin. I dumped it out on the table and grabbed any pieces large enough to fit the templates. It’s a great way to use up leftover fabric from previous projects, and I loved how economical it was. I didn’t have to buy anything new, and I still ended up with a fresh, creative design.
To assemble the block, start by joining the first two pieces together, then add the next piece on top. Sew the remaining two pieces together separately, then attach them to complete the block. It’s quick, easy, and a great way to play with color and pattern.
All the fabric I used came from past projects, giving this block a special, personal touch. The more varied the scraps, the better the quilt looks when everything comes together. Each block has its own character, and when combined, they form a lively, cohesive quilt full of texture and color.
We’ll include a link to the Creative Grids Non-Slip Scrap Crazy 8-inch Templates in the video description so you can check them out yourself. I truly love this set and think you will too. It’s an enjoyable, beginner-friendly way to turn fabric scraps into something beautiful.
Happy sewing!
