In this video, Nichole with @CrimsonandScarlet on TikTok and CrimsonandScarlett.com shows you how to make a beautiful boxy bag. The pattern that she uses for the bag is the Easy-Does-It pattern from By Annie part #PBA28525. She talks through the steps that you will need to make this amazing bag, as well as, showcasing the Easy-Does-It pattern. A huge plus of this project is it is fat-quarter friendly! We have fat quarters available at Sewing Parts Online.

STEP ONE: QUILT THE EXTERIOR

To start creating the boxy bag you are going to quilt the exterior, which consists of the exterior fabric and the lining fabric - sandwiching the soft and stable foam. As Nichole says, if you don't want a quilted look on the inside, you can quilt the exterior fabric and the stabilizer and then place the lining fabric. That way, you have the quilted look on the outside, but lined nicely on the inside!

STEP TWO: MAKE THE GUSSET FOR THE BOXY BAG

There is no reason to be scared of sewing zippers. Nichole shares an amazing tip. If you have a regular zipper, you will need to move the zipper head as you are sewing the gusset. However, if you have zipper by the yard, you do not need to add your zipper head until the end. This makes it more convenient since you will not need to move the zipper head as you go. Now back to the gusset, you will make your top gusset and your bottom gusset. Then you will place your panels and sew them onto your gussets. She gives a great tip on how to deal with sewing curves. Make your stitch length small so that when you go around your curve it becomes smoother. Take your time.

STEP THREE: ASSEMBLING THE BOXY BAG

Next, it is time to make the binding. You can choose whatever binding you would like. Nichole's tip is to start with the binding at the zipper. Let's think about it - when someone looks down into the bag, they don't see the top. This means that your top binding does not need to be perfect. The binding at the bottom of your bag is what is important because it is what is going to be seen.

NICHOLE'S TIPS AND TRICKS

Lastly, we are going to go over some tips and tricks. To apply a zipper to a zipper head, start by tearing it apart and placing the zipper halfway into the hole on the zipper. Then do the same thing on the other side. Push the zipper head down and it just slides on. She also recommends zipper genies because they help you to put your zipper head on. Fun hack- Nichole explains how you can turn your boxy bag into a purse. Simply attach a strap connector with an o-ring. Then make sure you thin out your gusset to make the bag more of a purse shape. Attach whatever straps you would like and, just like that, you have hacked your boxy bag into a purse.
