Domino Lane Quilt Block

Domino Lane is a simple black-and-white quilt block that proves you don’t need a lot of colors to create a striking design! For this project, I paired a crisp white fabric with Benartex Cat Artistry Circle Circle Swirl Black, which adds a little extra texture and interest compared to a solid black. The blocks finish at approximately 8 1/4 inches and are made two at a time using just a few squares and strips. By alternating the black and white pieces and adding diagonal corner units, the finished blocks create a fun repeating pattern that reminds me of dominoes lined up along little lanes. It’s an easy project with a bold finished look, and it’s a great choice if you’ve been wanting to try an all-black-and-white quilt.

How I Make the Domino Lane Quilt Block

For this project, I make two coordinating blocks at a time — one with a black center and one with a white center.

What I Cut

From each fabric, I cut:

Two 4 1/2" x 4 1/2" squares
Two 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" strips
Two 2 1/2" x 8 1/2" strips

I like to layer my black and white fabric together and cut both fabrics at the same time. It makes the cutting process go much faster.

Step 1: Start the Centers

I take one 4 1/2" square from each fabric and set the remaining squares aside. I use one black square as the center of my first block and one white square as the center of my second block.

Step 2: Add the Short Strips

Next, I take the 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" strips and place them on opposite sides of each center square.

I always use the opposite color:

White strips go with the black center.
Black strips go with the white center.

I sew the strips in place using a 1/4" seam allowance and press the seams.

Step 3: Add the Long Strips

Now I add the 2 1/2" x 8 1/2" strips to the top and bottom of each block.

Again, I use the opposite color from the center. I sew each strip using a 1/4" seam allowance and press.

At this point, I have the basic shape of both blocks.

Step 4: Add the Corner Squares

Remember those 4 1/2" squares I set aside earlier? Now I use them to create the diagonal corners.

For the block with the white center, I use the remaining white squares. I place one square in the upper corner and draw a diagonal line from corner to corner.

I sew directly along that line. Then I trim away the excess fabric, leaving approximately a 1/4" seam allowance beyond the stitching line.

I repeat the same process on the opposite corner with the second square.

Then I open the corners and press them into place.

I repeat the same process on the black-centered block using the remaining black squares.

Step 5: Arrange the Blocks

Once both blocks are finished, I place them next to each other with the colors alternating.

This is where the Domino Lane design really starts to appear! The contrasting black-and-white pieces create the look of dominoes running along little lanes throughout the quilt.
