My tension was off and I replace the tension spring and now my tension is better.
I have been amazed at the availability of the parts for these vintage machines. I have 8
Im so glad there is a place like this to order replacement parts
this did not fit my machine. It is not the correct size. Mine has a piece of metal that goes up the inside of the spring. That piece of metal is lays in a grove on the inside of the sewing machine.
As a whole the spring works. But the end that fits into the star cog must be COAXED to go in. I had to use needle nosed pliers and lots of adjusting to have it slide into place. The old (original) spring had a clear angled turn that slid right into place. This spring has a curve towards the inside portion that interferes with sliding over the cog and curve to the inward nearly 90º angle of the star cog that needed serious tweaking to get it to slip into place.
With such tweaks, it finally was able to slide in and now the machine's tension is back to functioning correctly.
The spring was not an exact match to the existing spring on my Singer 99k even though the part number was the same. The neck wire part was longer and hits the slack thread regulator so it's not useable. Very disappointing.
