Dealer floor staff helped solve my shredding thread problem and discovered that the thread guide had a slight groove in the metal that you could feel with your fingernail. I guessed that the previous owner may have used a lot of metal thread, and it had eaten a nick in the metal, as ordinary embroidery thread would not cause the problem. Replaced the part, and no more shredding.
