Halloween Candy Quilt Block | Easy Beginner Quilting Tutorial
Halloween candy gets two thumbs up from me, especially when we can turn it into a fun quilt block! This Halloween Candy Quilt Block is a quick, beginner-friendly project that uses simple squares and half-square triangles to create an adorable wrapped candy design.
I used checked Black and Orange fabric to give this quilt a festive Halloween look, but you can use any colors or prints you like. This would be a fun project for holidays, seasonal quilts, or even using up some of your favorite fabric scraps!
The best part? It's easy to put together, and I'm going to show you how!
Fabric Cutting Instructions
For one Halloween Candy Quilt Block, you'll need:
White Background Fabric:
-
(10) 3½" squares
-
(2) 4" squares
Print Fabric:
-
(2) 3½" squares
-
(2) 4" squares
Fabric Used: Benartex Checked Black and Orange
Step 1: Make Your Half-Square Triangles
Start with your two 4" white squares and two 4" print squares.
-
Place one white square and one print square right sides together.
-
Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the back of the white square.
-
Sew a ¼" seam on both sides of the drawn line.
-
Cut along the drawn line to separate the pieces.
-
Open and press your half-square triangles.
-
Repeat with the remaining squares to make four half-square triangles.
When making half-square triangles, you'll lose a little fabric in the seam allowances. Trim your finished HST units to 3½" square so they'll match the rest of your pieces.
Step 2: Arrange Your Quilt Block
Now comes the fun part!
Lay out your four half-square triangles, two print squares, and ten white squares to create the candy shape.
Position the half-square triangles to form the angled ends of the candy wrapper, with the print squares creating the center of the candy.
Take a moment to check your layout before sewing everything together. I always recommend taking a quick picture so you can reference it as you go!
Step 3: Sew Your Pieces Together
Once you're happy with your layout, it's time to start sewing.
-
Begin sewing your squares together in pairs using a ¼" seam allowance.
-
Join the pairs to create larger sections of the block.
-
Continue joining the sections, keeping your half-square triangles oriented correctly.
-
Sew the completed sections together to finish your candy design.
-
Press your seams as you go to help everything lay nice and flat.
And just like that, you've got yourself a piece of Halloween candy!
Step 4: Make It Your Own!
One of my favorite things about this project is how easily you can change its appearance just by switching fabrics.
Try making candy blocks in orange, purple, green, or even bright Christmas colors! Mix different prints to create a whole quilt filled with colorful wrapped candies.
This block comes together quickly, making it a great choice for beginners or anyone looking for a fun, simple sewing project.
Give This Halloween Candy Quilt Block a Try!
I think this is such a fun little project, and I hope you'll give it a try! With just a few squares and half-square triangles, you can create a festive quilt block that's easy to make and full of personality.
