Wonky Log Cabin Trim Tool
This video features Bob demonstrating how to make a wonky log cabin quilt block using the Creative Grids Wonky Log Cabin Trim Tool. He explains that the design builds outward from a center square in three rounds, creating an intentionally uneven or “wonky” look. Bob shows how to use the trim tool at each round to align and trim the block correctly, ensuring the irregular angles stay balanced. He praises the tool for making the process simple and precise, resulting in a fun and modern twist on the classic log cabin design. Bob wraps up by encouraging viewers to try the technique, subscribe to the channel, and enjoy sewing their own wonky log cabin blocks.
This is called a wonky log cabin. You’ve probably heard of a traditional log cabin quilt block, but this one has a fun twist. It’s intentionally uneven, which gives it a unique and playful look. I love how it turns out, and it’s all thanks to the Wonky Log Cabin Trim Tool. I’ll lay it on some white fabric so you can see the helpful lines printed on the tool. A log cabin block starts at the center and builds outward, round by round, with three rounds in total. The exact measurements are included in the trim tool’s instructions, so you don’t have to worry about guessing.
For the first round, I began with a green center square and added strips around it. After sewing the first four pieces, I used the trim tool, aligning the section labeled “Round 1A” over the center, trimming the edges, rotating twice, and then using the “Round 1B” side to finish trimming. The result looks perfectly imperfect, just as it should. I continued building with new strips for round two, repeating the same trimming steps using the “Round 2A” and “Round 2B” guides. By the third and final round, I used the section of the ruler labeled “Center Square, Round 3,” which allowed me to trim all four edges evenly.
The finished block has that charming wonky look without the frustration of uneven seams. The tool makes the process simple, accurate, and fun. I love how Creative Grids designs clever tools like this that make quilting easier and more creative. If you like the wonky log cabin, try this trim tool for yourself.
