How to Make a Twist and Turn Quilt Block | Easy Quilting Tutorial
I’m calling this quilt block Twist and Turn, and I absolutely love how it comes together! This is a great beginner-friendly project because it’s simple, quick, and there are no tricky points to match. For my block, I’m using fabrics from the Art Gallery Fabrics CUR8TOR Fat Quarter Bundle, which includes nine coordinating fabrics, each measuring 18" x 22". I chose two prints from the bundle and paired them with black fabric for a bold contrast, but you could easily use white or another coordinating solid depending on your fabric choices. With just a few simple cuts and straight seams, you can create a 7½" square block. Make several, turn them in alternating directions, and you’ll see the Twist and Turn design come to life. This is one of the fastest blocks I’ve made in a long time, so if you’re new to quilting or just want a fun, easy project, give this one a try. Happy sewing!
Cut Your Fabric
Cut:
- 2 – 4" squares, one from each of your two coordinating fabrics
- 2 – 2¼" x 7½" strips from your contrasting fabric
For my block, I used two prints from the Art Gallery Fabrics CUR8TOR Fat Quarter Bundle and black fabric for the contrasting strips.
Step 1: Sew the Squares Together
Place your two 4" squares right sides together along one edge.
Sew them together using your standard ¼" seam allowance.
Press the seam.
You should now have one rectangular unit made from your two different fabrics.
Step 2: Add the First Contrasting Strip
Take one 2¼" x 7½" strip and place it along one side of your pieced unit, right sides together.
Sew the strip in place using a ¼" seam allowance.
Press the seam.
Step 3: Add the Second Contrasting Strip
Place your second 2¼" x 7½" strip along the opposite side of the pieced unit.
Sew it in place using a ¼" seam allowance, then press.
That's it! You've completed your Twist and Turn block.
Step 4: Make More Blocks
Repeat these steps to create as many blocks as you need for your project.
When arranging your finished blocks, rotate each block in alternating directions. This simple rotation creates the movement that gives the Twist and Turn design its name.

Each completed Twist and Turn block measures approximately 7½" square, based on the measurements provided in the tutorial.
